Pair of comebacks give CMS series win over Whittier

WHITTIER, Calif. – Down late in both of its games at Whittier on April 18, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team found a way to win on each occasion as CMS swept Saturday's conference doubleheader and captured the weekend series win. In the first game of the day, CMS overcame a six-run deficit and came away with a 12-9 win. They then followed that up with a 5-4 come-from-behind win in the series finale. CMS is now 7-28 on the season, 5-19 in conference.

CMS 12, Whittier 9 (Game 1)
Down 9-3 after seven innings, the CMS offense came alive and scored seven runs in the top of the eighth inning to take a 10-9 lead. CMS began the inning with three-straight singles, one of which brought home a run. A one-out error by Whittier allowed a second run to score for CMS and opened the door for five more CMS runs, the big hit coming from freshman first baseman Nolan Anderson (CMC), a three-run homer which gave CMS the lead for good.

In the top of the ninth inning, junior third baseman MacKenzie Menthen (CMC) and Anderson came up with back-to-back RBI singles for some insurance runs and a 12-9 lead. Sophomore pitcher Sam Baughman (CMC) pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth for a two-inning save, his second save of the season. Menthen had a big day at the plate, going 6-for-6 in the first game of the day. Freshman Trey Smith (CMC) homered for the second time in as many days.

CMS 5, Whittier 4 (Game 2)
Once again, CMS found itself trailing late in the game, this time down a run, 4-3, heading into the top of the ninth. With two runners on, sophomore catcher Evan Opperman (CMC) evened the score with a single to center field. His hit moved senior center fielder Michael Gose (CMC) over to third which set up the game-winning run as Gose would score the game-winner on a wild pitch. Gose led CMS with a 4-for-5 game at the plate.

Menthen started the game on the mound and pitched six strong innings and allowed three runs with strikeouts. Junior Troy Odo (CMC) pitched the final three innings for CMS in relief and got the win.

Box score

CMS now enters the round robin portion of its conference schedule, with four more games, two at home (April 22 and April 28) and two on the road (April 25 and April 26). The CMS schedule will be updated as soon the final details become available with time and location.
