Menthen, Weissenfels lift CMS over Rutgers-Newark in series finale

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team won their final game in a weekend series versus Rutgers University in Newark (NJ). The Stags lost the first two games 11-7 and 13-2 respectively, and won the final game with a score of 11-10. After the series, CMS goes to 2-23 on the season.

Game 1: Rutgers-Newark 11, CMS 7

The CMS baseball team played close all game but fell thanks to big fourth and sixth innings by the Scarlet Raiders. The Stags let up four runs in the first inning but answered with three runs of their own to end the first. A big sixth inning in which Rutgers-Newark scored four runs to CMS' zero, was the deciding factor.

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning and a chance to tie the game, a victory seemed within reach but the Stags came up just short with a ground out to second base.

Nolan Anderson (CMC) had a great day at the plate, bating in two doubles, and one home run. MacKenzie Menthen (CMC) also added two RBI on his two hits.

Game 2: Rutgers-Newark 13, CMS 2

CMS had a slow start to Saturday's double header, giving up 12 unanswered runs through four innings to the Scarlet Raiders. The Stags kept it close in the remaining five innings but ended up falling 13-2.

The Stags scored on a double to center field by Evan Opperman (CMC) which allowed Menthen to score in the seventh inning and then again in the ninth when Austin Schoff (CMC) ran through home on a passed ball. Chas Bohannan from Rutgers-Newark led all players with three RBIs.

Game 3: CMS 11, Rutgers-Newark 10

The CMS Stags found their energy and their offense in the final game of the series, scoring seven runs in the first three innings to Rutgers-Newark's one. The Scarlet Raiders answered back, scoring nine unanswered runs to go into the seventh inning up 10-7.

Menthen led the comeback win, hitting a double which allowed three Stags to score. Menthen then scored a few pitches later by a sacrifice fly hit by Robby Weissenfels (CMC) which gave the Stags a one run lead going into the ninth inning. In the game, Menthen went 4-for-5 at the plate with six RBI, a double and a homer. He also scored two runs and pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing four earned runs with three strikeouts.

The Scarlet Raiders were close to answering in the ninth, putting men on second and third with two outs but the Stags provided a stout defensive effort to end up winning 11-10.  Troy Odo (CMC) pitched 3.2 innings for the Stags and gave up zero runs, earning him the win for the afternoon. CMS's next game is a single home contest vs. MIT on Wednesday, March 25th at 3:00 P.M. PST.
