Stags score six but swept by Willamette in series

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps' baseball team charged ahead in the bottom of the first off a deep homer by senior John Rizzo (CMC), but was unable to maintain the lead, losing 12-6 to Willamette. Today's game concluded the four game series with the Bearcats from Salem, Ore.

Freshman Robby Weissenfels led off the bottom of the first and was scored by classmate Trey Smith. With Christian Hoxsie on base later in the inning, Rizzo launched a ball high through the trees behind the left field wall. The Stags scored four runs in the first, giving them the 4-2 lead.

The Bearcats quickly regained the lead by putting up three runs in each of the second and third innings. Jack Brett homered to right center to give Willamette the 7-4 advantage.

The Stags added two more runs in the fifth and sixth innings by capitalizing on wild pitches.

Zachary Bern came in for CMS and pitched four complete innings in the middle of the game and allowed just one run. He struck out three and had only one walk.

Despite the loss, there were a few outstanding defensive plays. Nicholas Lillie ran through a one-hopper at the hot corner for an out in the fifth inning. After walking a batter in the top of the third, Stags' catcher Samuel O'Braitis picked off a Bearcat from first base.

On the day, Smith led CMS going 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI.

The Stags (0-4) next face Okanagan in an exhibition game at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 10 at Arce Field.
