Pair of big innings sink CMS in season-opening loss at The Master’s

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – In its 2015 season-opener, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team fell on the road to The Master's College, 10-4 on Feb. 3 at Reese Field. In its first game of the season, CMS ran into a team from The Master's that had already played in seven games so far in 2015.

The Master's did the majority of its damage Tuesday in the third and fourth innings, scoring three runs in the third inning and five runs in the fourth inning.

CMS senior pitcher John Rizzo (CMC) started the game and held The Master's scoreless over two innings in what was a "staff day" for CMS against a non-NCAA Division III opponent. In the bottom of the third inning, The Master's scored its first run of the game on a wild pitch by CMS freshman pitcher Jacob Brady (CMC). Brady got the loss in the game. Nick Covello followed with a two-run single down the right field line to give The Master's a 3-0 lead. The Master's then scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to go ahead 8-0.

In the top of the fifth inning, CMS put a few runs across the plate with a three-run homer to left field by senior left fielder Christian Hoxsie (CMC), who was hitting in the eighth spot in the lineup. Hoxsie had one of the three hits for CMS in the game, the other two belonging to freshman right fielder Trey Smith (CMC) and freshman third baseman Robby Weissenfels (CMC).

In the bottom of the fifth inning and again in the bottom of the sixth inning, The Master's tacked on single runs to take a 10-3 advantage.

The final run of the game for CMS came in the top of the eighth as sophomore catcher Nick Daifotis (CMC) narrowed the deficit to 10-4 on a RBI groundout which scored Smith.

Freshman pitcher John O'Malley (CMC) and junior pitcher Troy Odo (CMC) each threw scoreless innings in relief for CMS.

CMS is back in action on Feb. 6 for its home-opener vs. Willamette at 2 p.m. CMS hosts Willamette in a four-game series over the weekend with one game Friday, two games Saturday and one Sunday.
