CMS plays three close games and takes one from No. 3 Cal Lu

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Stags went toe to toe with the No. 3 ranked Cal Lutheran Regals in the weekend series. CMS was either ahead of or tied with the Kingsmen in each of the three games but ultimately lost 9-7 and 5-4 before winning the second game of the Saturday doubleheader 6-2. Sophomore Samuel Woodman earned the win, his third on the season, by holding Cal Lu scoreless through five innings.
Friday game: CLU 9, CMS 7
The Kingsmen got off to a swift start scoring five runs in the first three innings including a three RBI homer in the first by Collin Crowl to give them a 5-0 lead going into the sixth inning.
The Stags put together an explosive top of the sixth, scoring seven runs off six hits. The first three batters in the inning all singled: freshman Evan Opperman, Senior Michael Erb and sophomore Andrew Burgard. Woodman knocked in Burgard and Erb with another single to right field. After two pitching changes, sophomore Mackenzie Menthen doubled out to right to add two more for CMS.
The Stags held onto their 7-5 lead until the bottom of the seventh when CMS walked three Kingsmen and gave up a hit to put Cal Lu ahead 9-7 where the score remained.
Saturday game 1: CLU 5, CMS 4
In the second game of the series, CMS out-hit Cal Lu and did not commit a fielding error in the evenly matched game.
CMS tied up the game the first time on a fifth inning homer from the sophomore Jack Witte. Earlier in the inning, Woodman doubled and then was scored by senior Scott Witte.
The Stags tied up the game at four runs apiece in the bottom of the eighth when Erb singled and then stole second base, putting him in position to score on senior Ray Hurwitz's single.
The Kingsmen came out on top only after scoring the go ahead run on a sac fly in the top of the ninth inning.
Saturday game 2: CMS 6, CLU 2
In the third game of the series, the Stags finally came out on top scoring in three different innings for the 6-2 victory.
Stellar pitching performances by Woodman and junior John Rizzo kept the Kingsmen at bay as the Stags blanked CLU for eight consecutive innings.
At the plate, Scott Witte was 2-3 with a towering homer in the seventh to score junior Christian Hoxsie. Witte had three of the team's five RBI.
Rizzo recovered from some loss of control on the mound in the top of the ninth to strike out the last batter and earn his Stags the win over the No. 3 Kingsmen.
Cal Lu has only lost four SCIAC games this season and is 22-6 overall.
CMS is now 9-20 on the season, 5-13 in SCIAC. This Friday, the Stags host Redlands at 3 pm before heading to Redlands for a Saturday double header.
