Extra inning win gives CMS doubleheader split at Pomona-Pitzer

CLAREMONT, Calif. – A day after dropping a close game at home against Pomona-Pitzer, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team rebounded with a doubleheader split against Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field. CMS won the first game of the afternoon, 11-7 in 10 innings, and then lost the second game 5-3. CMS is now 3-5 overall and 1-2 in conference play.

Game 1: CMS 11, Pomona-Pitzer 7
CMS got four runs in the top of the 10th inning on three-straight hits to pull out the 11-7 win. The scoring began in extra innings for CMS on a RBI single by senior IF Michael Erb. The next batter, senior IF Ray Hurwitz, doubled home two runs to give CMS a 10-7 lead. The Stags added its final run of the game on a single by freshman C Evan Opperman.

Erb, Hurwitz and Opperman combined for eight of the team's 11 RBI in the game with Erb and Hurwitz each coming up with three RBI. Senior IF Scott Witte added a hit and three walks for CMS while sophomore Mackenzie Menthen added his first homer of the season.

Senior pitcher Andor Kesselman gave up two hits in the 10th but pitched a scoreless final inning to get the win in relief. Kesselman pitched five innings in relief for CMS while junior starter John Rizzo pitched the first five innings and held Pomona-Pitzer to three runs.

CMS led 7-3 after the top of the seventh inning but Pomona-Pitzer got two runs in the seventh and eighth innings to even the score and send the game into extra innings.

Game 2: Pomona-Pitzer 5, CMS 3
Pomona-Pitzer took the rubber match of the three-game series with a 5-3 come-from-behind win in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader.

CMS jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a home run to right field by sophomore IF Jack Witte off of Lane Miles. Over the next few innings, Pomona-Pitzer chipped away at the CMS lead with a run in the second and third innings. Then in the bottom of the fourth inning, Pomona-Pitzer took the lead 3-2 with an unearned run. Despite getting the loss, sophomore Clayton Brock pitched well for CMS as he went 5 2/3 innings and allowed three runs, two earned.

Pomona-Pitzer pushed its lead to 4-2 in the seventh on an RBI single by Timmy Novom. CMS answered in the top of the eighth with a sacrifice fly by freshman Traven Tapson which scored Erb and narrowed the Pomona-Pitzer lead to 4-3 which is as close as CMS would get. The Sagehens got an insurance run in the eighth and then Kevin Kannappan retired CMS in order in the ninth to get the save.
