Stags victorious over Alumni 8-0

Stags victorious over Alumni 8-0

It was a remarkable day at Arce Field on Saturday, February 1st for the annual Alumni Game. There was a fine showing by the alumni as 50 players returned including four members from the first Stag Baseball team in 1959, Wes Parker, Geoffrey Gordon, Tom Thuresson and Brian Gerich (pictured below), and of course Bill Arce, the founder of the program.

The schedule for the day included a five inning alumni vs alumni game followed by a Challenge Game between the "younger" alums and our current team.  The first game featured strong starting pitching from Scott Fisher '03 and Scott Smith '02, but it was Bobby Koczon '07 with the eephus pitch that stole the show. Steve Lopez '75 handled the bat well going 4 for 4 (at least that is what the book said).

The Challenge game went as a 2-0 game until a six run sixth by the current team broke it open. David Ulrich '12 started and Alex Sunderland '11 followed keeping the Stags hitless, but they eventually got to the Alumni middle relievers to open up the game. Also contributing for scoreless innings were Steve Ferguson '11, Matt Allan '11, Ryan Jeffrey '07 and Matt Green '06. There was not much offense on either side until Cameron Ridley opened up the game in the sixth with a clutch double. The shut out by the Stag pitching staff was impressive, but they had their share of trouble as Mitch Pike '12 had an impressive hit for the alums to put pressure on our defense.
