Stags Split Doubleheader Against Whitman

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team split its doubleheader against Whitman College on Wednesday at Arce Field. The Stags collected their first win of the season with a 12-0 decision in the first game, but fell 8-3 in game two. CMS is now 1-3 overall.

Game 1: CMS 12, Whitman 0
CMS jumped out to an early lead against Whitman when, in the bottom of the first, Scott Witte doubled down the left field line scoring Jack Witte and Ray Hurwitz singled home another run making it 2-0. Hurwitz helped the Stags erupt for four more in the bottom of the second with a two run double propelling the Stags to their first win of the season.

This would be plenty of run support for junior RHP Andor Kesselman (1-1) as he would go the distance throwing a five hit shutout. He was able to escape a no outs, bases loaded jam in the fourth and would finish the day with four strikeouts.

Hurwitz went 3-4 with a team-high 3 RBI while S. Witte went 2-3 with 1 RBI.

Game 2: Whitman 8, CMS 3
In the bottom of the third the Stags battled back from an early deficit when sophomore Christian Hoxsie singled, allowing senior Brian Bartlett to score. Samuel O'Braitis would cross home on a Whitman error to tie it at 2-2. Two innings later, in the bottom of the fifth, Hoxsie would score on a S. Witte single to give the Stags their only lead of the game at 3-2.

Hoxsie would end the day going 2-4 with a RBI and a run scored.

The Stags will travel next Friday, Feb. 15, to play rival Pomona-Pitzer at 2:30 PM.
