Claremont, CA - The CMS Baseball team got off to an auspicious start to its 2020 season, taking three of four from Northwest Conference teams on opening weekend. Sophomore Brandon Rho came through with the biggest hit of the weekend, a two-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the eighth to give CMS a 4-3 win over Lewis & Clark on Saturday.

Rho had a strong weekend overall, leading the regular lineup with a .357 on-base percentage and five RBI. He also had two doubles, drew three walks and led the team by a wide margin in OPS at 1.185.

But his one swing of the bat changed the momentum of the weekend, as CMS had just relinquished a 2-0 lead in the top of the eighth, when the Pioneers scored three runs to take the lead and potentially spoiling a dominant performance from junior pitcher Brandon Mitchell (one hit and 14 Ks over the first seven innings). With two outs in the eighth, and the Stags with their backs against the wall, Rho took one out over the right field fence to flip the script and give CMS its third win of the weekend.

CMS will be back in action in two weeks when it opens SCIAC play against Cal Lutheran, hosting the Kingsmen on Friday, Feb. 21 at 2:30 p.m. and then traveling to Thousand Oaks for a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 11 a.m.
