Matthew Jacobs - Men's Tennis

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Junior Matthew Jacobs found himself in an unexpected high-pressure situation in a road match for CMS men's tennis against unranked MIT, having the match in the balance tied 4-4 and trailing by a set, but he responded in a big way to give the Stags a hard-fought 5-4 win on Tuesday.

With only four courts available at the JB Carr Tennis Bubble, the players at No. 5 and No. 6 singles had to wait until matches were completed at 1-4 singles for a court to become available. Jacobs was the last one to start his match with CMS trailing 4-3, and after Daniel Park earned a quick 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 5 to tie it 4-4, everything rode on Jacobs' match against Arman Dave of the Engineers.

With all eyes in the bubble focused on his match, and an active Division III tennis blogosphere on high alert for a major upset in the making, Jacobs came through with a tight 6-4 win in the second set for the split, then kicked it into another gear in the third, winning 6-1 to give CMS the narrow 5-4 victory to start its spring trip on a winning note. Jacobs also added a second singles win against Coast Guard on Wednesday, which CMS won by a more comfortable 9-0 score, improving his record on the year to 6-1.

CMS, which also defeated No. 8 Wesleyan 5-4 on its Spring Break trip and fell to No. 7 Amherst 5-4, will be back in action tonight for another big match against No. 5 Williams at 6 p.m., before facing No. 1 Chicago on Friday at 9 a.m. and No. 2 Middlebury on Saturday at 12 noon.
