O'Keefe was one of CMS' best all-around throwers. He was a three-time NCAA qualifier in the hammer throw, finishing 14th as a sophomore, seventh (All-America) as a junior and second (All-America) as a senior. He was a four-year SCIAC placer in both the shot put and hammer. Upon graduation, he had bests of 48-9 (shot), 152-4 (discus), and 189-2 (hammer). He was ranked second in the hammer and discus and fourth in the shot at that time. As a senior in 1989, he was the SCIAC champion in the hammer, track team captain and high point man for the Stags. O'Keefe also played tight end for the Stags football team for three years. He earned second-team All-SCIAC honors as a junior. The Stags were SCIAC champions his sophomore and junior years.
