Grosse was the ''iron man'' of the 1955 Pomona-Claremont SCIAC championship football team. In that season, Rusty played 455 of a possible 480 total minutes, and played all 60 minutes in five games. In 1956, he played 427 of a possible 480 minutes, and all 60 minutes in three games. He is described by coaches, teammates, and opponents as the best blocker and tackler in the league. He started every game in the 1955 and 1956 seasons at quarterback and defensive halfback. Rusty was one of the toughest, most competitive, and fundamentally-sound players of his era.
