Women’s Soccer season recap

A SCIAC Postseason Tournament title, program record for wins in a season (17), and a thrilling win in the first round of the NCAA Tournament were just a few of the highlights from a stellar 2016 season for the Athenas. A five-match win streak to close out the regular season propelled the team into the conference tournament as the No. 2 seed. In the conference semifinals, CMS defeated Cal Lutheran 3-2 in overtime and then beat Chapman 4-0 in the finals to earn the SCIAC’s automatic berth to the NCAA Championships. In the first round of the NCAA Tournament at Pomona-Pitzer, CMS knocked off the previously unbeaten Pacific Lutheran squad 1-0. The following day in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, Pomona-Pitzer defeated CMS 6-0. In 2016, CMS had a 17-6-1 record, 11-2-1 in conference competition. Three Athenas made the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-West Region second team in 2016: senior Laynee Laube (CMC ’17), senior Amy Johnson (CMC ’17) and junior Jacey Coniff (HMC ’18).
