2013 Men's Golf: Shigezawa Becomes Second National Champion for CMS Men's Golf

CMS Men's Golf continued to make a growing imprint on the national scene in 2013, finishing in the top five at nationals for the second year in a row. In addition, for the second time in a four-year span, the Stags had the individual national champion, as Bradley Shigezawa took first place at nationals by four strokes to help CMS to the fifth-place finish.

Shigezawa finished his 72 holes at -2, taking the lead on the third day with a two-under 69, and then holding off second-place Buddy Hallman of Texas-Tyler by four strokes. Shigezawa was consistent the whole way through his week, shooting 72, 70, 69 and 72 over his four rounds.

Kethan Reddy shot the low round of the NCAA Championship weekend with a 68 on the second day and finished in a tie for 32nd overall, while Ben Ho and Jordan Stein tied for 59th and Patrick Fujieki came in 68th.

The following year as a senior in 2014, Shigezawa would lead CMS to its first SCIAC title since 1995, winning the individual title as the Stags came back from a late six-stroke deficit behind Redlands in the final round to win by just four strokes. Reddy, meanwhile, would earn first-team All-America honors as a sophomore and then go on as a senior to lead CMS to the national title in 2016.

Kethan Reddy:

As a freshman, meeting and competing with my new teammates was a thrill and a challenge.  Brad's whole season was some of the best golf I've ever seen. I would challenge him every chance I got, but don't think I ever beat him until my sophomore year.  During the national championship, I remember sitting beside the 18th green with my teammates at the Sandestin Resort. We were winded from final exams on the road and daily golf in the Florida humidity, and reflecting on our respectable performance. It was electric watching Brad unleash a wicked uppercut fist pump as he birdied a pretty tough closing hole with a fifteen footer. He would go on to reenact it that evening at the jacuzzi.
