CMC75 Moments: 2010 Women's Lacrosse Dominates in First Season of SCIAC

As part of the buildup to the 75th Anniversary celebration for Claremont McKenna College (visit CMC's 75th Anniversary Countdown Page to learn more), we are reliving many of the great moments from CMS athletic department history over the 75-day countdown from April 17 to July 1. 2010 Women's Lacrosse: Athenas Go 10-0 in First Season of SCIAC

The CMS Women's Lacrosse program had already achieved quite a bit in its seven seasons before the SCIAC began sponsoring the sport in 2010. The Athenas won 10 or more games all seven seasons, compiling a 84-23 record and reaching the NCAA Tournament three times, starting out with a 10-3 record in its debut season and earning its first NCAA bid in 2007 after a 15-0 start.

With the SCIAC offering a championship for the first time, though, the 2010 team had a new incentive and took full advantage, immediately establishing CMS as the power program in the conference with a perfect 10-0 league mark, including a 16-11 win over Redlands in the first championship game. The closest SCIAC game it played was the opener, a 15-12 victory over Whittier, and the Athenas kept their magic going with a 21-18 win in the opening game of the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Sarah Dick was named the first-ever SCIAC Player of the Year after scoring 67 goals (then a program record, which still ranks fourth), and was named an All-American for the second time in three seasons. She was joined on the All-SCIAC first team by Devon Scott, Colbi Brawner, Madi Shove, Molly Murtaugh, Shelly Sheinbein, Cordelia Soloman and Katie Campbell-Morrison, while Jennifer Cohen was named to the second team.

Jennifer Cohen:

2010 was a year of changes for the CMS Lacrosse team. There was a whole new coaching staff and team dynamic shift, the class of 2009, who made a lasting impact had graduated, and SCIAC established a lacrosse championship for the first time. While the SCIAC Championship was new, it was our fourth consecutive run to the NCAA tournament. There was no automatic bid, so our Spring Break games and overall record meant more than anything.

After beating Redlands to win the SCIAC title, we then hosted Endicott College in the first round of the NCAA tournament on Pomona's lower soccer field. This was only the second time CMS hosted a NCAA Lacrosse game! After beating them 21-18 we advanced to the NCAA round of 16. Unfortunately, we lost to TCNJ but not before putting up a fight on their home turf with a strong cheering section.

What made the season so special was that our class (2010) had made four consecutive NCAA appearances. When we arrived at CMS in the fall of 2006, we were all eager to put West Coast lacrosse on the map and represent in the national tournament. Four years later we had done just that, and the program was flourishing. The addition of the SCIAC Championship was a nice addition and helped cap regular season play and make things more official. However, it's the NCAA tournament games and travel that I will always remember and hold a special place in my heart.
