National Champions: Claremont 7s capture NSCRO men's rugby title

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Claremont Lions defeated Salve Regina University 17-0 on June 3 to win the NSCRO 7's National Championship for the first time in team history. This event was one month after they finished as runners up in the 15’s National Championship in Atlanta.

A team of 11 CMC student-athletes and one Pitzer student-athlete challenged for another title for the program. On day one, the team swept their pool going 3-0 with wins over Salve Regina (17-5), Susquehanna University (36-7) and New Mexico Highlands University (24-14). The next day the team played the reigning 7’s national champions, Christendom College, and despite an early deficit, Claremont came out on top with a 17-12 victory built on character and desire.

Later in the day the Lions found themselves facing a familiar foe in Salve Regina, who had deservedly upset the favorites from Iowa Central in their semifinal, and once again the Lions came out on top with a 17-0 shutout to win the championship.

Brendan MacDonald (CMC ’18), Rodrigo Mejias (CMC ’18), Robert Chui (CMC ’18), Robert Weissenfels (CMC ’18), Zack Bern (CMC ’18), Connor Lehner (CMC ’20), Conner Pederson (CMC ’20), Max Sickinger (CMC ’20), Matt Sill (CMC ’21), Matthew Grundlingh (CMC ’21), Jeremy Seow (CMC ’21) and Abraham Asante (Pitzer ’20) made up the roster.

Robby Weissenfels and Conner Pederson were selected as the tournament Most Valuable Players.
