Stags and Athenas finish within top 3 at Coyote Challenge

San Bernardino, CA – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps cross country teams finished within the top 3 at the Coyote Challenge hosted by Cal State San Bernardino as the Stags took second place (63 points) behind Division II #25 Cal Baptist University (60) while the Athenas finished in third (65) behind hosts CSUSB (26) and Cal State San Marcos (48). This was a strong finish in spite of the fact that this was their fourth consecutive racing week.

All five of the scoring Stags finished within the top 19 on the 8K course, including senior Kyle Lund (HMC), junior Kevin Huang (HMC), senior Joshua Sealand (HMC), senior Garrett Ryan (CMC), and senior Jesse Joseph (HMC). Lund was the highest finishing Stag at 9th place with a time 26:47.1 while Huang followed right behind him at 26:49.8. Sealand, who was running a controlled race, took 15th place at 26:56.0. Ryan (27:01.4) and Joseph (27:03.6) finished 18th and 19th, respectively.

The Athenas ran a strong race in the 5K, with five of the scoring Athenas finishing within the top 21. Eight total runners finished within the top 25. The top 4 runners for the Athenas managed to finish within three seconds of each other. Junior Bryn McKillop (SC) finished 11th overall with a time of 19:31.4, while senior Carmen Mejia (SC) (19:31.6) and sophomore Malea Martin (CMC) (19:33.0) followed right behind her. Senior Caroline Willian (CMC) took 16th with a time of 19:34.5 and senior Rachel Mow (HMC) finished at 21st with a time of 19:48.7.

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps country country programs will race next week at the SCIAC Multi-Dual Meet in La Mirada, CA on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 9 a.m.
