CMS Defeats Redlands 7-3 for Fifth Straight SCIAC Win

CLAREMONT, Calif. Christina Kulick scored three goals and added two assists as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team picked up its fifth straight SCIAC win, defeating Redlands 7-3 on Saturday morning at Axelrood Pool.

CMs also played a non-league game against CSU Northridge in the afternoon, dropping a 10-8 decision. With the split, CMS moves to 11-6 on the year, while picking up a key SCIAC win to remain in second place in the league at 7-1.

CMS starting goalie Jessica Salaz finished the game with four saves and allowed only three goals against the Bulldogs. Redlands scored the first goal of the game with 3:40 left in the first period but Kulick quickly responded by scoring back-to-back goals to give CMS a 2-1 lead with 20 seconds remaining in the period. Mia Adsen scored the only goal of the second period to give CMS a 3-1 lead through 16 minutes of play.

Kulick scored her third goal of the game off a Maddy Menard assist to give the Athenas a commanding 4-1 advantage less than four minutes into the third period. Redlands fought back and got within one, 4-3 after two unanswered goals but Emily McElroy found the back of the net for the Athenas to take a 5-3 lead with 55 seconds remaining in the quarter. Cooper McKenna and Emily McElroy both added goals in the fourth and CMS was able to get the final defensive stops it needed, holding Redlands scoreless in the final period while capturing a 7-3 win.

McKenna scored three goals for the Athenas in a losing effort against CSU Northridge, while Mia Adsen added two. CMS scored six goals in the fourth quarter as it tried to rally from a 5-2 deficit after three, but came up just short.

CMS will be back in action on Monday when they host Division I Brown at 5:00 p.m. at Axelrood Pool.
