The CMS-ence of Kaitlyn Eng

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Kaitlyn Eng, an engineering major at Harvey Mudd, is one of four seniors who will be honored by the women's water polo program for its annual Senior Day, prior to Saturday's home match with La Verne at 11 a.m. at Axelrood Pool.

Eng's collegiate career has included 47 victories with the Athenas, including an 18-7 record in SCIAC in the last two years, as CMS looks to take another step towards earning a postseason bid in this weekend's match-up with La Verne (the two teams are tied for third in the SCIAC at 7-4). But her collegiate career has included victories outside the pool as well, including an engineering project that is currently being utilized on the International Space Station. 



Last summer, Eng served as a project engineer intern with Honeywell Aerospace in Torrance, Califonia, for their electromechanical actuation group. Much of her work was on designing actuators for airplanes to control cabin pressure and other components at 35,000 feet, but one of her projects ended up a lot higher than that on the international space station (which orbits around 254 miles up, or approximately 1.3 million feet).

As part of her academic work at Harvey Mudd, Eng has also worked with a team of students to design and build a prototype for small satellites for Millennium Space Systems in El Segundo, as well as for Virgin Orbit in Long Beach, working on designing a lighter composite material to save weight for their rockets. 

As she reflects on her four years, Eng is appreciative of the opportunity that choosing CMS has provided her, taking on a rigorous courseload while still taking part in intercollegiate athletics, and also extending her social reach beyond just her fellow engineering majors.

"Being an Athena means that I can balance my academics," she said. "Not only taking engineering at Mudd, but also being able to play a competitive sport here at CMS.  Being an Athena has also meant that I get to spend time with my teammates and make really amazing friends at the other Claremont Colleges that I probably would have not had the opportunity to meet."
