No. 2 Cal Lutheran Defeats CMS Women's Water Polo in SCIAC Opener

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team fell in its SCIAC opener on Wednesday afternoon at Cal Lutheran, dropping an 11-4 decision to the Regals.

Cal Lutheran, which came into the match ranked No. 2 in Division III, improves to 8-6 the loss, including 2-0 in SCIAC play, while CMS, ranked No. 3 in Division III, slips to 2-8 on the season and 0-1 in league play. 

The Athenas scored first when sophomore center Chandlyr Denaro scored off a feed from senior Emma Choy 2:09 into the game, but Cal Lutheran responded with the next four goals, two from Christin Hirn to take a 4-1 lead early in the second quarter. 

Choy stopped the run with a goal on a 6-on-5 to make the score 4-2 with 6:01 left in the half, but the Regals were able to extend their lead to 6-2 going into the half. 

The run extended to 7-0 for Cal Lutheran when the Regals outscored CMS 3-0 in the third quarter and tacked on the first two goals in the fourth. The Athenas closed out with the final two goals, both from Aracelia Aldrete, to make the final 11-4. 

Lexi Rond led all scorers with three goals for Cal Lutheran, while Megan Seeman had two goals and three assists. 

CMS returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Caltech for an 11 p.m. contest at Axelrood Pool.
