Kiessling Nets Seven as Athenas Edge Regals

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – With the third seed in the SCIAC Tournament already solidified, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team wrapped up the regular season with a trip to Cal Lutheran on Saturday morning. The Athenas earned a hard-fought 11-10 victory against the Regals, thanks in large part to seven goals from senior Roxy Kiessling (CMC). After being held scoreless in the first period, Kiessling scored three goals in the second period and netted a pair of goals in both the third and fourth to finish the day with seven goals on nine shots.

The Athenas held the advantage in shots with 22 against the Regals' 11, but Cal Lutheran kept it close throughout the entire game. The Regals held a 3-2 lead at the end of the first quarter, but CMS responded with a 4-3 advantage in the second period to tie the match 6-6 at the half. Kiessling came out firing, scoring the first two goals of the period within a minute of eachother, giving CMS a 4-3 lead. The Regals responded with the next two to regain the lead before Jessica Gaffney (CMC) scored to bring the contest to 5-5. Kiessling found the net once more in the period, as did Cal Lutheran, sending the game into halftime at a 6-6 tie.

A three-goal third quarter gave the Athenas a 9-8 lead heading to the final period. Kiessling continued to attack the net, scoring the first goal of the third period just 30 seconds in. Two minutes later, the senior scored her fifth of the game to put CMS in front 8-6. Christine Hu (CMC) added the ninth CMS goal and sent CMS into the final frame with a one-goal lead.

With four minutes remaining in the contest, CMS bumped their lead to 11-9 and held off the Regals despite a late goal by Cal Lutheran's Nicole Roed with 29 seconds remaining.

As mentioned, Kiessling could not be stopped in the pool, scoring seven goals in the contest. Gaffney also added two goals while Hu and Aracelia Aldrete (CMC) each tallied one.

The Athenas finish the regular season with an overall record of 18-9 and hold an 11-3 record in the SCIAC heading into the SCIAC Tournament. CMS will head to Thousand Oaks to face the second seed, Cal Lutheran, to open up the SCIAC Tournament on Friday at 4 p.m.
