Locked-in offense seals CMS final home victory

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team finished the regular season on a positive note, delivering an 11-7 victory at home against Caltech. The Athenas (9-19, 3-5) provided plenty of offense to break past the tough Beavers' defense (1-15, 0-8) as junior Jessica Gaffney (CMC) led the team with three goals. Freshman Celeste Cerna (HMC) added a goal with two assists while sophomore Emma Choy (CMC) had two goals with an assist.

Sophomore Christine Hu (CMC) opened up the game with a goal less than 30 seconds into the first period, and later sophomore Kaitlyn Eng (HMC) found Gaffney near the net to double the lead. Gaffney added one more after receiving a quick pass from sophomore Haley Gibbs (SC) to give CMS a 3-1 lead at the end of the first period.

After scoring a goal apiece in the second period, the Athenas managed to pull the game away in the third with a 3-0 run thanks to two goals from Choy and a solo effort from Gaffney to make it 7-2. The Beavers added one more before the end of the third period and later scored two straight in the fourth, but the Athenas quickly silenced their efforts after Kiessling found the net at close range thanks to a perfect pass from Eng. The Athenas never looked back as they sealed the win.

With the regular season in the books, the Athenas will get ready for the SCIAC Championships hosted by La Verne beginning Friday, April 21.
