Athenas bested by Brown
CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team got quite unlucky against Brown University (11-2) on Sunday night, finding the post more often than the net on shots that could have shifted the momentum of the game. Although the Athenas (6-16, 0-3) managed to hold thir Division I opponent to three goals in the first period, the lack of goal scoring allowed Brown to pull the game away.
Junior Jessica Gaffney (CMC) and sophomore Claire Baxter (CMC) had a goal apiece while sophomore Haley Gibbs (SC) and junior Mariah Mastrodimos (SC) co-led the team with two steals each. Marisa Kolokotronis led the Bears with four goals while goalkeeper Lauren Burns recorded eight saves.
The Bears jumped to a 3-0 lead during the first period, including two goals from Kolokotronis. With three seconds left, Gaffney managed to pull one back with a floating shot to make it 3-1. However, the second period did not go in the Athenas' favor as the Bears locked down on defense to hold them scoreless. Brown scored three more goals to take a 6-1 lead at the half.
Kolokotronis opened up the scoring in the third period, but that was all the Bears would muster in that period as the Athenas grinded it out on the defensive end and forced the Bears to some big misses and wasted possessions. CMS finally found the net with 7:32 left in the game when Gaffney threw a crossing pass from the right side of the pool towards Baxter. With one touch, Baxter pushed the ball past the keeper to make it 7-2. Unfortunately for CMS, the Bears added two more goals towards the end to seal the game.
The Athenas will resume SCIAC play on Saturday, Apr. 1 as they head to Occidental College to face the Tigers at 11 a.m.
