Scoreless third quarter costs CMS in SCIAC Championships loss to Chapman

REDLANDS, Calif.  – A scoreless third quarter for the fourth-seeded Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team sunk CMS as fifth-seeded Chapman won 10-8 on the opening day of the SCIAC Championships on April 22 at Thompson Aquatics Center. With the loss, CMS drops into the consolation bracket of the SCIAC Championships and plays No. 8 seed Occidental on April 23 at 5:15 p.m. In the team's lone match-up this season, CMS defeated Occidental 7-6 on April 2.

Ahead 5-4 at halftime on Friday, CMS (7-18, 4-5 SCIAC) failed to score in the third quarter and Chapman went on a 3-0 run to take a 7-5 lead heading into the final frame. Alison Quincy scored each of the three goals in the quarter for Chapman on her way to a six-goal night. The lead stretched out to 8-5 before CMS broke its scoring drought on a goal by Tess van Hulsen (CMC) and just 4:49 left.

Chapman extended its lead to 10-6 over the next four minutes to lock down the win. Sophomores Roxy Kiessling (CMC) and Jessica Gaffney (CMC) tacked on a pair of goals in the final 65 seconds for CMS. Gaffney's goal came on a breakaway after a steal.

Kiessling led CMS with three goals while Gaffney and junior Ellen Perfect (CMC) scored two goals apiece. Mariah Mastrodimos (SCR) saved five shots in net for CMS.
