Women’s water polo SCIAC Championships preview

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The No. 4 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team faces No. 5 Chapman University in the quarterfinals of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championships on Friday, April 22 at 7 p.m. The Championships are held April 22-24 at the Thompson Aquatic Center on the University of Redlands' campus.

All nine SCIAC programs will compete and ultimately determine the winner of the conference in the championship game at 3:15 p.m. on April 24. Current standings and goal leaders are available on the SCIAC website.

As this is a conference playoff event, admission will be charges as follows:

  • All SCIAC students, faculty, and staff with institutional ID: Free
  • Children 12 years of age and under: Free
  • General Admission: $10
  • Seniors (55+) and Military: $5

The whole tournament can be followed online via a video broadcast for a $10 fee (per SCIAC regulations).

During the regular season, the Athenas were 4-4 in SCIAC with wins over Redlands, Caltech, Occidental and Chapman. In the game played against Chapman, CMS won 10-8 on the road. Sophomore Roxy Kiessling (CMC) fired off five goals in the game including two in the fourth quarter to secure the win. The Athenas started off slowly, only scoring one goal in the first quarter from freshman Tess van Hulsen (CMC). CMS won the second quarter 3-2 to tie the game 4-4 going into halftime. As both teams scored four goals in the third, it all game down to the fourth quarter. The CMS defense shut out Chapman in the quarter while Kiessling netted two goals for the victory. Sophomore Mariah Mastrodimos (SCR) made eight saves during the game.

Kiessling leads the Athenas with 51 goals overall, 25 in SCIAC play, ranking her No. 2 in the conference. Also in the top-25 is sophomore Jessica Gaffney (CMC) who has 35 in the season and 13 in SCIAC games.

Chapman finished the regular season at 4-4 as well but earned the No. 5 seed due to the loss to CMS. Their wins came against Redlands, Occidental, Caltech and Cal Lutheran. Against CMS, Grace Schade was the most effective with three goals but ultimately left the game early in the fourth quarter after her third ejection.

Allison Quincy leads CU and the SCIAC with 76 goals this season and 28 in conference play. Kerry Goodspeed has the majority of the time in the net and has totaled 32 saves in eight SCIAC games.
