Trio of goals in early minutes sink CMS against Pomona-Pitzer

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Just over two minutes into the match and the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team faced a three-goal deficit against Pomona-Pitzer in the regular season finale. CMS kept the match close but was not able to overcome its slow start as Pomona-Pitzer led for the duration and won 14-10 in a SCIAC match on April 13 at the Haldeman Aquatics Center.

Pomona-Pitzer led by as many as four goals in the third quarter on three different occasions. Christina Williamson scored her third of four goals in the game at the 7:35 mark of the fourth quarter to give Pomona-Pitzer a 12-8 lead. Junior Ellen Perfect (CMC) and sophomore attacker Roxy Kiessling (CMC) pulled CMS within a pair of goals at 12-10 with 4:41 left.

Morgan McCracken pushed Pomona-Pitzer's advantage to 13-10 with three minutes remaining and then tacked on one final goal to seal the win.

Kiessling and sophomore Jessica Gaffney (CMC) each scored a team-high three goals for CMS (7-17, 4-4 SCIAC). Williamson and Jocelyn Castro netted four goals apiece for the third place Sagehens (11-15, 6-1 SCIAC).

Upcoming for the Athenas are the SCIAC Championships, April 22-24 at Redlands.
