Two more SCIAC wins for women’s water polo

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team notched two wins on Saturday beating Caltech on the road 9-6 and then closing out the day with a tight win over Occidental, 7-6. With the wins, CMS improves to 6-15 overall and 3-2 in SCIAC play, good for a tie of fourth place.

Despite getting shutout in the first quarter, the Athenas battled back to go ahead 3-2 going into halftime. Two of CMS' three goals came off 6-on-5 opportunities in the second period. Junior Ellen Perfect (CMC) got the Athenas going with a goal at the 5:29 mark and then sophomore Roxy Kiessling (CMC) fired off two in a row to end the second quarter.

Sophomore Jessica Gaffney (CMC) scored an exciting goal in the third period after stealing the ball from Oxy's goalie in the final seconds to put CMS up 5-3.

Occidental made a valiant effort to send the game into overtime with two goals in the last two minutes to bring the game within one goal at 7-6, but they were unable to get a good shot off in their last possession

In the morning matchup against the Caltech Beavers, more Athenas contributed to the victory. Freshman Haley Gibbs (SCR) and senior Nicole Orozco (CMC) scored their first goals of the season while freshman Emma Choy (CMC) earned her first in a SCIAC game.

On the day, Kiessling and freshman Tess van Hulsen (CMC) led with three goals each with Kiessling upping her season total to 42.
