Brown defense holds Athenas to six goals

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Coming off an exciting win last Friday afternoon over Virginia Military Institute, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team struggled to find the back of the net on Monday against Brown University. Despite scoring the first goal of the game and then winning the fourth quarter, CMS fell behind in the middle and ultimately lost 13-6.

The Athenas hung tough in the first quarter with goals by sophomores Claire Baxter (CMC) and Roxy Kiessling (CMC) for the 3-2 score going into the second period.

The Bears pulled away in the second and third quarters, scoring nine goals to CMS' one.

In the final period of play, the Athenas scored on three consecutive possessions. Baxter got it started with a steal and then freshman Tess van Hulsen (CMC) flung it past the Bears' goalie for CMS' first goal of the quarter at the 3:36 mark. The Athenas forced a turnover on Brown's next attack and then sophomore Jessica Gaffney (CMC) earned the next goal. Gaffney netted one more, less than a minute later after junior Ellen Perfect (CMC) snagged an offensive rebound.

Next up for the Athenas (3-15, 0-2 SCIAC) is Redlands (5-16, 1-2 SCIAC) on Wednesday, March 30 at 7 p.m.
