Good defense keeps Athenas close to Leos

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team came up just short of the University of La Verne 10-9 in the Wednesday night SCIAC matchup. Sophomores Roxy Kiessling (CMC) and Jessica Gaffney (CMC) captained the offense and defense respectively in a game that came down to the last few possessions.

La Verne jumped out to an early lead of 4-2 in the first quarter as Stephanie Rosero found the back of the cage twice. Then, the Athenas punched back in the second quarter as sophomore Claire Baxter (CMC) scored twice for CMS.

The Leos out-scored the Athenas 3-1 in the third to take a three-goal lead entering the fourth quarter. CMS won the fourth quarter, scoring three goals including one as time expired at the end of the game. Kiessling finished up with five goals and sophomore Helen Thomason (SCR) added one in the fourth.

Gaffney did well guarding La Verne's leading scorer, Guarina Garcia. Garcia, who has scored 27 goals in 10 games for ULV, was held to just one on the night. In goal, sophomore Mariah Mastrodimos (SCR) recorded six saves, continually giving her teammates a chance to stay in the game until the last second.

CMS drops to 2-9 overall and 0-1 in SCIAC. Next up for the Athenas is the Lancer Invite hosted by Cal Baptist March 11-12. There, CMS will face George Washington, La Verne (again), Cal Baptist and Iona.
