Late goal by Chapman stuns CMS

CLAREMONT, Calif. – A goal with 37 seconds left in regulation of the SCIAC Championships third place match gave Chapman a 10-9 win over the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team on April 26 at Haldeman Pool. The loss ends CMS' season at 11-17 overall, 8-3 in conference. CMS defeated Chapman 7-5 in Claremont earlier in the season.

Heading into the SCIAC Championships, CMS sat in second place in conference with just one loss – to Pomona-Pitzer. Back-to-back losses however to No. 3 Whittier and No. 4 Chapman during the SCIAC Championships gave CMS a fourth place finish overall.

Chapman's game-winning goal came from Riley Ford with 37 seconds to play. Ford scored four times for Chapman to lead all scorers. Senior Rose Koper (CMC) scored just nine seconds earlier to even the score at 9-9, before Ford's goal won it. CMS had a last-ditch attempt to tie it up and send the match into regulation but that shot went off the post.

Throughout the entire 32 minute match, no team led by more than one goal. CMS led at 3-2 (second quarter) and 5-4 (third quarter). Back-to-back goals by Chapman's Emily Holmquist and Kate Avery gave Chapman a 6-5 lead with 2:04 to play in the third quarter. Sophomore utility Brittany Arneson (CMC) evened the match up at 6-6 with 36 seconds to play in the third but CMS would not regain the lead for the rest of the match.

Each time CMS scored in the second half, as was the case with Arneson's goal, Chapman would bounce back and regain the lead.

Arneson and freshman Roxy Kiessling (CMC) scored three times each to lead the CMS offensive attack.
