High-scoring third quarter propels CMS by Cal Lu and into SCIAC semis

CLAREMONT, Calif. – A high-scoring third quarter helped the No. 2 seed Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team pull away from seventh-seeded Cal Lutheran for a 13-7 win in the opening round of the SCIAC Women's Water Polo Championships on April 24 at Haldeman Pool. The win propels CMS into the semifinals on Saturday, April 25 at 2:30 p.m. against the winner of the La Verne versus Whittier match-up.

CMS (11-15, 8-1 SCIAC) led 6-3 at halftime against Cal Lutheran and then outscored Cal Lutheran 5-3 in the third quarter to take a commanding 11-6 lead with a quarter to play. Sophomore utility Brittany Arneson (CMC) scored the opening goal of the third quarter less than a minute in to give CMS a 7-3 lead. Cal Lutheran then answered and made the score 7-4. After another goal from Arneson and one from Cal Lu, CMS put together a match-changing 3-0 run from the 3:29 to 1:43 mark, that opened the lead up to 11-5. During the 3-0 run, three different players (Roxy Kiessling, Rose Koper and Haley Conner) all scored for CMS during the two minute stretch.

Cal Lu (7-19, 3-6 SCIAC) scored a goal by Tatiana McCuaig to close out the third quarter and another goal by Amanda Jones a minute into the fourth quarter which put them within four at 11-7 with 6:59 to play. Conner's second goal of the match broke CMS' brief scoreless streak and freshman attacker Jessica Gaffney (CMC) closed out the CMS win with her third score of the match to lead all CMS scorers. Seven players scored a goal for CMS with five players scoring two goals or more.

Amanda Jones led CLU with three goals. In net, senior Allison Hu (CMC) came up with six saves. Gina Merry had nine saves for CLU.
