Strong No. 7 Bucknell takes CMS 11-6

CLAREMONT, Calif. – After a busy weekend for the Convergence Tournament, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team had just one opponent on Wednesday afternoon in Axelrood Pool: No. 7 Bucknell University. The Athenas lost to the Bison 11-6 despite a strong 3-goal fourth quarter.

Freshman Roxy Kiessling found the net first for the Athenas at the 3:39 mark in the first quarter. Haley Conner and Rose Koper each scored in the second period making the halftime score 7-3 with Bucknell out front. The Bisons' tough defense held CMS scoreless in the third quarter as they widened the gap to 9-3. CMS had good scoring opportunities but bad luck saw least four shots hit off the crossbar during the game.

Claire Baxter started off the fourth quarter with a quick goal, ending the drought. Then, Camille Zelinger and Jessica Gaffney scored back to back goals as Bucknell was called for offensive fouls and relinquished possession.

Allison Hu played the entire game in the cage and was instrumental in keeping the score within reach through a few big saves.

The Athenas (3-11) head to Cal Baptist for the annual Lancer Invitational Mar. 14 to play Iona and Fresno Pacific. CMS begins SCIAC competition Mar. 21 at La Verne.
