Koper scores six in Athenas’ first win at Lancer Mini Tournament
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team earned its first win on the season beating conference foe, Redlands, 17-9 during the Lancer Mini Tournament over the weekend. CMS also faced host school, Cal Baptist and lost 12-4.

Senior Rose Koper (CMC) was a standout performer in the Athenas' first game of the weekend. Koper scored six goals in the game, three in the second quarter.
The only time CMS was behind in the game was after the first goal. Past that, the Athenas scored six in a row to go up 6-1 midway through the second quarter. Scoring during that run were Roxy Kiessling (CMC) and Shannon Golden (CMC) in the first quarter and then Jessica Gaffney (CMC) and Koper in the second.
In both the second and third quarter, Koper scored within the final minute of the period.
The Bulldogs put together a four-goal third quarter but CMS raised Redlands with five of its own. The Athenas scored consistently throughout the whole game, putting at least three balls in the back of the net in each quarter.
In the cage, Allison Hu (CMC) made three saves.

Against the Lancers in the nightcap, CMS started slow, not scoring until after halftime. The aggressive CBU offense jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first half. Cal Baptist's goalie made three saves during the half, keeping CMS scoreless.
In the second half, the Athenas were almost even with CBU with four goals to the Lancers' five. Gaffany was the only Athena to have a multi-goal game with one in each the third and fourth quarter. Ellen Perfect (CMC) and Koper each added one as well.
Hu recorded ten saves in the game, significantly limiting the Lancers' scoring.
The Athenas (1-5) next face Hawaii at home on Thursday, Feb. 19 at 7:30 p.m. in Axelrood Pool.
