Toohey’s big second half helps CMS get by Chapman on first day of SCIAC Championships

WHITTIER, Calif. – Holding on to a one goal lead at halftime, the No. 2 seed Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team pulled away in the second half behind four scores from senior driver Alex Toohey to defeat No. 7 seed Chapman 12-6 on the first day of the SCIAC Championships at Whittier's Lillian Slade Aquatic Center. CMS has advanced and next plays at 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 26 against the winner of the match between No. 3 seed Whittier and No. 6 Occidental.

CMS is now 16-12 on the season and 8-1 in SCIAC play.

Against Chapman, CMS went on a 4-1 run in the third quarter to turn a one score match at halftime into an 8-4 lead after senior driver Alyssa Filippelli scored with under a minute left in the quarter. During the run, Toohey had two of the team's four goals. She scored all four of her goals in the second half and tied with senior utility Candace Filippelli for a team-high in goals.

With 42 seconds left in the third quarter, Chapman answered back on goal by Emiko Mizusawa to get within three at 8-5 which is as close as the score would get for the remainder of the match. CMS then outscored Chapman 4-1 in the final quarter to advance with the 12-6 win.

Junior Allison Hu had nine saves in net for CMS. Mizusawa and Kate Staskus led Chapman, each with two goals.
