Comeback for Athenas falls short in overtime loss to Sagehens

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Down 4-0 in the first quarter, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team came all the way back to force overtime, only to lose 8-7 in sudden death overtime to Pomona-Pitzer on April 19 at Axelrood Pool. The loss, the first of the conference season for CMS, dropped CMS to 15-12 overall, 7-1 in SCIAC. CMS is now the No. 2 seed heading into the SCIAC Championships, which runs from April 25-27 at Whittier.

A 5-meter goal by Alyssa Woodward with just under a minute into sudden death overtime gave Pomona-Pitzer the win after both teams played two scoreless overtime periods prior.

To start the match, Pomona-Pitzer built a 4-0 lead with goals from four different players. CMS got its first score of the match with 2:18 in the first quarter on a score by senior Alex Toohey that sparked a 3-0 run by CMS to get within a score at 4-3.

CMS took its first lead of the match at 6-5 with 3:25 left in the third quarter on a goal by senior utility Candace Filippelli, but Pomona-Pitzer took the lead right back at 7-6 a minute later.

In the fourth quarter, CMS junior driver Rose Koper scored the lone goal of the quarter at the 6:24 mark which eventually forced overtime.

Toohey led CMS with two scores while five others had one goal. Woodward and Mahalia Prater-Fahey each had three goals for Pomona-Pitzer.
