Late goal seals close win for CMS over La Verne

CLAREMONT, Calif. – So far this spring, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team has two SCIAC matches under its belt, both wins, but each of the matches have been close as CMS most recently pulled out a 10-8 win over La Verne on March 29 at Axelrood Pool. CMS is now 10-11 overall, 2-0 in SCIAC, while La Verne dropped to 4-18, 0-3 in conference play.

With 2:07 remaining in the match, CMS held a one goal lead at 9-8 after Catie Tuning scored for La Verne. With 28 seconds left in the match, senior driver Meghan Jimenez sealed the win for CMS with a goal to give CMS a 10-8 lead and the win.

CMS led by as many as three scores on several occasion, the last time being 9-6 in the third quarter. La Verne then scored back-to-back goals to make a match of it late in the fourth quarter.

Senior driver Alex Toohey led the Athenas with five scores, three in the first half, while freshman utility Brittany Arneson had two goals. Junior goalie Allison Hu had nine saves for CMS.

CMS next plays on April 2 at Caltech and at Cal Lutheran on April 5.
