Hu comes up big in net as CMS takes down D-I George Washington

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Junior goalkeeper Allison Hu had 16 saves in net and the defense came up big when it needed to, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team continued its strong play of late, winning 13-10 over George Washington on Tuesday evening at Axelrood Pool. CMS has now won four of its last five matches and three in a row to improve to 5-7 overall with conference play looming in the middle of March.

CMS got on the board first with a score by senior utility Candace Filippelli just over a minute into the match. At the 5:14 mark of the first quarter, George Washington answered back with a goal of its own by Katherine Berry. While George Washington and CMS were tied on a few occasions in the first quarter, CMS trailed just once at 2-1.

With the score even at 3-3 at the end of the first quarter, CMS ran off three-straight scores to jump ahead 6-3 on a goal by junior driver Rose Koper with 5:08 left in the half.

In the second half, CMS led throughout, but George Washington did get within one score at 10-9 on a goal by Hannah Cox with 6:29 left in the match. Back-to-back goals by senior driver Alyssa Filippelli and senior driver Alex Toohey, the latter coming with just less than four minutes left in the match, secured the win for CMS.

Toohey had a match-high four goals, all in the second half, while junior utility Haley Conner finished second on the team with three scores.
