Hawaii proves to be too much in home-opener for Athenas

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Back in action for just the second time in almost three weeks, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team dropped its home-opener 18-6 to the University of Hawaii on Thursday, Feb. 20 at Axelrood Pool. With the loss, CMS drops to 0-5 on the season with all five losses against non-NCAA Division III opponents.

After giving up two goals in the first two-plus minutes to Hawaii, CMS came right back with two scores of its own to even the match at 2-2 on goals by senior utility Candace Filippelli and senior driver Alyssa Filippelli, the second goal at the 3:16 mark of the first quarter.

Hawaii responded a minute later with a goal by Emily Carr to go ahead 3-2. Carr's goal started a 5-0 run for Hawaii over an eight minute stretch that turned a 2-2 match in the first quarter to a 7-2 Hawaii lead late in the second quarter. Junior driver Rose Koper broke the scoring drought for CMS with 2:53 left before halftime but Hawaii managed control of the match from that point on.

CMS played Hawaii tight in the fourth quarter holding Hawaii to just three goals while scoring two.

Senior driver Kelly Davis led CMS with two scores while Paula Chillida Esforzado led Hawaii with four scores.

CMS next plays on March 1 vs. Sonoma State and Michigan in neutral site matches.
