Win Over VMI On Final Day Of Claremont Convergence Highlights Polo’s Weekend

CLAREMONT, Calif. – With a 9-5 win over Virginia Military Institute (VMI) on Saturday at Axelrood Pool, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team completed a 1-3 weekend at the Claremont Convergence Tournament and now stand at 6-11 overall. CMS opened the tournament on Friday with a 13-7 loss to Cal Baptist and a 14-8 loss to Indiana. Then on Saturday, CMS defeated VMI before it closed out the weekend with a 17-8 loss to UC San Diego.

Cal Baptist 13, CMS 7 (Friday)
A goal at the 5:05 mark of the first quarter for CMS by junior driver Alyssa Filippelli tied the score at 1-1. Cal Baptist answered with back-to-back goals from Laura Kosis and Briana Tryon in under a minute to take a 3-1 lead with 4:16 remaining in the first quarter. CMS narrowed the score to 3-2 with 1:23 remaining in the first quarter on a goal by junior utility Candace Filippelli which is as close as they would get the rest of the game. The turning point proved to be a three minute stretch in the second quarter when Cal Baptist pushed its lead from 3-2 to 7-2. Both Candace and Alyssa Filippelli had two goals to lead CMS while Kosis had six for Cal Baptist. Sophomore goalie Allison Hu had a team-high seven saves for CMS.

Indiana 14, CMS 8 (Friday)
The first two quarters for CMS proved to be a struggle as Indiana ran out to a 10-1 lead at halftime. Down 2-0, sophomore driver Rose Koper scored for CMS at the 5:52 mark of the first quarter to make it 2-1. Indiana then scored eight-consecutive goals to close out the half. In the second half, CMS outscored Indiana 7-4. Candace Filippelli, junior driver Alex Toohey and Koper each had two goals for CMS. Shae Fournier had a game-high four scores for Indiana.

CMS 9, VMI 5 (Saturday)
After back-to-back goals by VMI's Celline Lazzaro which gave VMI a 2-1 lead at the 2:15 mark of the first quarter, CMS scored six-straight goals to take a 7-2 lead at halftime. Toohey had four of her game-high five goals during the game-deciding run. Lazzaro had three scores for VMI. Both Hu and junior goalie Taylor Basso had five saves in net for CMS.

UCSD 17, CMS 8 (Saturday)
CMS held a brief 1-0 lead after Candace Filippelli scored 30 seconds into the match. UCSD then took control as they scored 11-straight goals over a 12-minute span. Sophomore driver LillyBelle Deer ended the CMS scoring drought with 2:55 remaining in the first half. UCSD led 13-2 at halftime. Similar to the Indiana game, CMS had a much stronger second half as they outscored UCSD 6-4 over the final 16 minutes. Candace Filippelli led CMS with four scores, three of which came in the second half while 10 different players scored for UCSD. Hu had seven saves in net for CMS.

Next up on the schedule for CMS is a home match vs. Hartwick on March 20 at 11 a.m. Later in the afternoon on March 20, CMS hits the road to face Chapman at 5 p.m.
