CMS Volleyball Moves to 19-0 with 3-0 Sweep of Redlands

REDLANDS, Calif. - Dede Carranza had 31 digs in three sets and Jenna Holmes added 17 kills as the CMS volleyball team took a 3-0 road win over Redlands on Tuesday evening at Currier Gymnasium.

Set scores were 25-15, 25-22, 25-15 as second-ranked CMS remains perfect on the season at 19-0, including 12-0 in SCIAC matches (including 36-1 in sets won). Redlands slips to 2-15 overall and 0-11 in the league.

It took a while for the Athenas to shake Redlands in the first set, as they led just 15-13 before closing on a 10-2 run. Audrey Sawyer and Brenna Bell had kills to start the run, and after Redlands got to within 20-15, CMS closed on a 5-0 run, which included an Emma Thompson ace and kills from Kelsey Polhemus and Izzy Sakoda

The second set saw the Bulldogs lead 15-11 before a 4-0 CMS run, which included two straight Sawyer kills. The score was tied 21-21, before Polhemus and Summer Ellis had kills. Redlands earned the next point, but a Holmes kill and a Redlands error finished off the 25-22 win and gave CMS the 2-0 lead.

The Athenas started fast in the third set, taking a 7-2 lead behind three kills from Holmes. Redlands got back within 11-9, but CMS used a 9-2 run to take control, which was capped off by Holmes picking up a kill and a block for the final two points. An Isabel Yau-Weeks ace made it 24-13 and set up match point, and after Redlands fought off two, the Athenas took the win on a Bulldog error for a 3-0 sweep.

Carranza added nine aces to go with her career-high 31 digs. Ellis had nine kills and hit .438 on the day, while Bell had six kills and hit .500. Georgia McGovern had 24 assists and 11 digs.

CMS will be back in action tomorrow for a 7 p.m. home contest against Occidental, before traveling to Calvin on Friday and Saturday for three matches against top-10 teams (Calvin, Hope, Ohio Northern).
