CMS Volleyball Clicks On All Cylinders in Sweep of Redlands

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps volleyball team hit .531 as a team with 48 kills and only five errors as it rolled to a 3-0 win over Redlands on Friday evening at Roberts Pavilion.

Set scores were 25-15, 25-6, 25-18 as CMS improves to 12-0 on the season and 5-0 in the SCIAC, with all five league wins coming via 3-0 sweeps. Redlands falls to 2-8 overall and 0-4 in conference play. 

Audrey Sawyer had nine kills in 10 attempts for CMS, and Melanie Williams had eight kills in 10 attempts, as the Athenas hit .571 in the first set, .593 in the second set and .423 in the third set on their way to the dominant win. Of the five errors CMS had on the night, three came on Redlands blocks, and only twice did the Athenas not put the ball in play off their 81 attacks. 

Summer Ellis had a team-high 10 kills in 19 attempts, Jackie Jones had seven kills in 10 attempts and Lauren Parker had five kills in six attempts. Georgia McGovern had 23 assists and Spencer Hagenbuch had 19 as the two setters quarterbacked the offense ro near perfection. 

The Athenas used a 10-0 run in the second set to turn an 11-3 lead into a commanding 21-3 advantage before settling for a 25-6 win. Redlands regrouped, though, and gave CMS a battle in the third set, staying within 16-15, before Parker had a kill and two blocks in a 3-0 run to put the Athenas up 19-15. The Bulldogs got back within one point again at 19-18, before CMS closed it out on a 6-0 run for the sweep, with Parker, Izzy Sakoda, Sawyer, and Jenna Holmes picking up kills during the closing stretch. 

CMS will be back in action tomorrow afternoon when it travels to Occidental for a 4 p.m. contest.
