Video Tribute: The CMS Volleyball Class of 2021

As part of NCAA Division III week (Apr. 5-11), we will be honoring the senior classes for all 21 of our varsity sports. A number of our student-athletes elected to take a semester or a school year off and could return to action next season, but we have chosen to honor the senior classes as they would have been, without the COVID-19 interruption. The members of the Class of 2021 lost so much of what they had built towards in their first 2-3 years of competition when the pandemic hit, but still clearly left their mark on CMS Athletics.

CMS Volleyball celebrating the 2017 national title CLAREMONT, Calif. - The senior class of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps volleyball team had an enormous impact during their careers. The Class of 2021 contributed to the first women's team national championship in CMS history as first-years in 2017, and added two more SCIAC Championships as sophomores and juniors.

In that historical 2017 season, the Athenas won five straight 3-1 matches to reach the national championship for the first time in program history, then capped off the storybook season with a 3-0 win over Wittenberg to win the national title.

The Class of 2021 had a three-year record that was a remarkable 85-13, given the quality of the competition the Athenas always played, and their resume includes three SCIAC regular season titles, three SCIAC Tournament titles, and three top-10 finishes in the final AVCA rankings. Their legacy will also include raising the program to a status that enabled it to earn the right to host the 2023 NCAA Division III Volleyball Championships at Roberts Pavilion.   


The four members of the CMS Volleyball Class of 2021 include:

#18 Regan Dinovitz (6-2, MB, Camarillo, Calif. - CMC, Economics) 
Despite only playing three seasons, and missing the first 14 matches of her sophomore season, Dinovitz still moved into the top five in program history in career blocks with 283. She has two of the top 10 single-season block totals in school history as well, with 116 total blocks in 2018, and 108 in 2017. Dinovitz was a SCIAC All-Academic Team selection as an economics major at Claremont McKenna, and held an internship and a part-time position with Northwest Mutual over the 2020 calendar year. She also volunteered with the Claremont Community Foundation and with Child Services at the Jamboree Housing Corporation. 

#7 Lucila Grinspan (5-11, OH, Rio Cuarto, Argentina - HMC, Engineering)
Grinspan was a two-year starter at outside hitter, as well as a two-time member of the SCIAC All-Academic Team as an engineering major at Harvey Mudd. In 2019, she totaled 232 kills (2.42 per set) to lead CMS to a 27-4 record and a SCIAC Championship, and had 10 kills in a win over WashU in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. She also had 10 kills in a win over Augsburg in the 2018 NCAA Tournament as a sophomore. An engineering major at Harvey Mudd, she has begun work with Accenture as a Platform Advisory Analyst. While on campus she was an HMC Clinic Team Lead at the City of Hope and an Engman Fellowship researcher. 

#23 Jessica Lee (5-9, Setter, Palo Alto, California - CMC, Psychology and Economics)
Lee has been a regular member of the CMS setter rotation throughout her career. She stepped up as a sophomore to play in 27 matches and tally 210 assists, including 26 assists in a 3-2 win over Brandeis. She also had a double-double with 13 assists and 11 digs in the SCIAC Championship match win over Cal Lutheran, and had three service aces in a win over No. 1 Emory. An economics and psychology dual major, she has held a part-time job as a marketing user research analyst for Adobe in San Francisco since 2020.  

#17 Melanie Moore (5-10, MB, San Mateo, Calif. - CMC, Economics)
If Moore doesn't use her final season of eligibility, she will graduate as the school's all-time leader in career hitting percentage (.323), shattering the old mark of .303. She also ranks fourth in school history in career blocks with 294 in three seasons. She was first-team All-SCIAC and first-team All-West Region as both a sophomore and junior, and had 10 kills in 16 attempts in the SCIAC Championship as a junior to earn MVP honors. An economics major at CMC, she has served as a research analyst for the Financial Economics Institute on campus, and has had summer internships with Drekar Capital LLC and Exous Inc. during her undergraduate career.
