No. 7 Athenas End Regular Season with Sweep of Cal Lu

CLAREMONT, Calif. – On Saturday evening, the No. 7 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's volleyball team completed the regular season with a 3-0 (25-11, 25-19, 25-11) sweep against the Cal Lutheran Regals. Shelbi Stein led the CMS attack with 16 kills and a .414 hitting percentage. Crystal Anderson (CMC) joined Stein with double-digit kills, finishing the match with 11.

Mikena Werner (SC) finished with a match-high 20 digs to lead four Athenas with 10-plus digs in the match.

The Athenas jumped right out to a quick 10-2 lead behind kills from five different Athenas. Later in the set, CMS held a 15-7 lead before eight-straight points pushed the advantage to 23-7. After two points for the Regals, Shelbi Stein (CMC) delivered a kill and two points after that, CMS won the set 25-11 on a service error.

The second set started out with the same storyline as the opening set, with CMS building a comfortable, 10-4 lead. Unlike the first set, the Regals battled back and closed the gap to just two at 11-9. The margin remained tight throughout. CMS did not pull away until a 5-2 closed out the match at 25-19. Stein ended the set with a kill, her ninth of the set.

Once again, the Athans took an early lead in the third set, thanks to three-straight kills from Crystal Anderson to open the set. CMS eventually lead a 8-3, but their lead was whittled down to two at 11-9. Reagan Dinovitz (CMC) started a streak of 13-straight points for the Athenas that put CMS in the driver's seat at 24-9. Cal Lutheran scored two-straight points, but Crystal Anderson ended the match with a kill and gave CMS the 3-0 (25-11, 25-19, 25-11) victory.

The win wraps up the regular season for CMS. The Athenas will now move on to the SCIAC Playoffs as the top seed in the tournament. The SCIAC Semifinals are scheduled for Thursday at 7:00 p.m. in Roberts Pavilion. The Athenas will host the fourth-seeded Chapman Panthers.
