Kerkhof, Madsen, Stein and Werner named All-SCIAC

PASADENA, Calif. – After the second-consecutive regular season co-championship in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, the No. 3 ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's volleyball team landed four athletes on the All-Conference first and second team.

The Athenas are represented by outside hitter senior Nicole Kerkhof (CMC), junior opposite Shelbi Stein (CMC) and junior libero Mikena Werner (SC) on First Team while junior setter Clara Madsen (CMC) earned Second Team honors.

This season marks Kerkhof's fourth All-SCIAC award and third on First Team and was named SCIAC Athlete of the Week on Sep. 6.. The senior has been a consistent force in both the Athenas' offense and defense this year putting up double figures in kills and digs in 8 of the 14 SCIAC matches she has played in. Kerkhof is second on the team with 3.13 kills per set for a total of 147. While being on the floor through the entire rotation, she also has 19 blocks to her name. In the final three matches of the regular season, she hit over .375 in each while recording just two errors in 91 attacks.

Werner makes her second appearance on the All-SCIAC First Team. Defensively, she leads the next highest athlete in the conference by over 20 digs, all accounted for in one less set. The team currently ranks No. 4 in NCAA DII for digs per set at 20.21 and Werner individually is No. 27 in the nation. Her highest single game total was 34 digs in the 3-1 win over Cal Lu in September.

Stein earns her first All-SCIAC nod with the First Team selection in 2016 and earned SCIAC Athlete of the Week on Sep. 26. She ranks fourth in the conference at 3.38 kills per set and boasts a .311 percentage on the season. Additionally, she has hit over .350 in six of her 14 matches played. Stein's most efficient match of the season came just last week against Redlands when she hit .476 and recorded 12 kills en route to the team's 3-0 win.

Madsen earns Second Team All-SCIAC accolades for the second season in a row and was SCIAC Athlete of the Week on Oct. 10. CMS ranks at No. 2 nationally in assists per set (13.80) and kills per set (14.54), due in large part to the superb setting of Clara and Phoebe Madsen (CMC). Clara Madsen has contributed 329 assists for a 6.85 average in conference play. Supplementing her setting, Madsen is third on the team with 2.79 digs per set and ranks eighth in the SCIAC with 20 service aces.

CMS is represented by junior Margaux Arntson (CMC) on the SCIAC Sportsmanship Team.

The Athenas face No. 3 seed La Verne on Thursday, Nov. 3 for the SCIAC Semifinal in Roberts Pavilion at 7 p.m.
