Athenas roll past Caltech

CLAREMONT, Calif. – A different face of the No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps volleyball team earned the 3-0 win over Caltech on Tuesday night (25-14, 25-10, 25-11). Freshmen Amanda Walker (SC) and Isabelle Taylor (CMC) combined for 27 of the team's 54 kills on the night, and were assisted almost exclusively by classmate Phoebe Madsen (CMC). CMS earned their 20th win of the season and now have four consecutive seasons of 20+ wins.

The first set swung swiftly in CMS' favor as sophomore Kimmy Tuttle (CMC) made three kills in a row to take the 8-3 lead. Tuttle went on to have seven in the match and did not commit an error for a .438 hitting percentage. Walked added two kills at the end of that string and ultimately put down five in the set.

Taylor saw some more time on the court in the second set and made six kills in 13 attacks. Freshman libero Sarah Tritschler (CMC) had seven digs during the second for her most successful set of the night. Madsen dumped three balls for kills in the set while never substituting out of the rotation.

The final set saw the Athenas only make two errors. In the match, CMS hit an impressive .460. Sophomore Megan Fuelling (SC) was the most efficient Athena on the night with four kills in seven attacks for a .667 percentage while Jenny Smith (HMC) contributed six kills and a trio of digs in the second and third sets.

Caltech's offense was orchestrated by the setter, Ellie Walker, who helped Alexa Lauinger put away eight kills in the match. The only Beaver hitter without an error was Claudia Canamas.

With the win – and No. 2 Cal Lu's 3-0 victory over No. 22 La Verne tonight – CMS remains tied for first place at the top of the SCIAC.

The Athenas (20-2, 12-2 SCIAC) have two games left as they hit the road to face Whittier (9-16, 5-9 SCIAC) on Friday night and then host Redlands (13-12, 3-11 SCIAC) on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. for Senior Day.
