Volleyball owns Sixth Street with straight set win

CLAREMONT, Calif. – In their first meeting in the 2016 season, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps made quick work of the Pomona-Pitzer volleyball team, winning 3-0 (25-12, 25-13, 25-14). In the match, juniors Shelbi Stein (CMC) and Crystal Anderson (CMC) each hit over .420 with 17 kills combined.

The Athenas controlled the game from the very beginning. Junior setter Clara Madsen (CMC) served for six points in a row including an ace for the 7-0 lead. The Sagehens hurt their chances initially with 10 errors in the first set, ultimately hitting -.065.

CMS was almost able to keep its errors for the match in single digits with just 12 on the afternoon.

The No. 2 ranked Athenas demonstrated their dominance with a team hitting percentage of .267 and nine aces in the match. There were neither reception errors nor service errors for CMS in all three sets.

Defensively, junior libero Mikena Werner (SC) made 12 digs of the team's 30 while senior Nicole Kerkhof (CMC) contributed eight.

Anderson and Stein found success in each of the sets as Madsen executed her set placements with precision.

CMS remains undefeated in the 2016 campaign at 16-0, and at the top of the conference at 8-0 in SCIAC. The Athenas host Chapman (9-9, 4-5 SCIAC) on Tuesday, Oct. 11 in Roberts Pavilion.
