Athenas take Redlands in four sets

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's volleyball team maintained their SCIAC winning streak with tonight's 3-1 victory over Redlands (25-17, 25-13, 24-26, 25-20). The Athenas held the Bulldogs to a .140 hitting percentage over the match, with two of the sets at less than .100.

Four CMS players had double-digit kills on the night with junior Shelbi Stein (CMC) leading at 12 and junior Margaux Arntson (CMC) hitting .547 with just one error. Junior libero Mikena Werner (SC) tacked on another 24 digs to remain in the top-10 nationally for digs per set. The Athenas went up for seven total blocks as junior Mariah Rigg (CMC) contributed in four.

In the middle of the first set, Werner served for four points in a row. During that time, CMS was still able to put down kills despite Arntson and sophomore Hannah Grobisen (CMC) earning the assists. Junior Clara Madsen (CMC) tallied the majority of the assists on the night with 26.

The second set went a similar way as the first. Service specialist Phoebe Madsen (CMC) helped the Athenas go on a nine point run to extend the set out of Redlands' reach. By the time the Bulldogs rallied at the end of the set, CMS already had the 22-9 lead. Rigg made the final kill of the set for CMS to take the 2-0 lead in the match.

The rally that Redlands put together in the second carried into the third set. The teams traded points for the majority of the set until the Athenas broke the tie and had a double match point. Redlands scored four points in a row with kills by Kaylee Burkick to force a fourth set.

Kerkhof recorded four kills in the final set as the Athenas create enough separation to comfortably win the match. Junior Crystal Anderson (CMC) added a number of kills in the fourth to end up with 10 in the match.

Next up for CMS (15-0, 7-0) is an other road game at Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 4 p.m.
