Third SCIAC Championship, first in 22 years for Athenas

REDLANDS, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps volleyball team earned their first SCIAC title since 1993 with the 3-0 win over Redlands tonight (25-15, 25-11, 25-16). CMS finishes the SCIAC season at 14-2 in conference play, matching Cal Lutheran for a share of the regular season championship.

In the match, CMS hit .333, the best percentage since the last time the Athenas met Redlands on Oct. 6. Outside hitters Crystal Anderson (CMC) and Nicole Kerkhof (CMC) hit 12 and 13 kills respectively as Kerkhof went for her 17th double-double in kills and digs on the season.

Kerkhof earned the final kill of the game, assisted by senior Tanner Hoke (CMC), to secure the win and SCIAC title. Watch the last point here.

Freshman Hannah Grobisen (CMC) and sophomore Mariah Rigg (CMC) blocked up the middle of the court, each assisting on three blocks. Also in double-digit digs for CMS were sophomore libero Mikena Werner (SCR) with 16 and junior Natalie Creekmur (CMC) with 10.

As the No. 2 seed in the SCIAC Tournament, CMS will play No. 3 seed La Verne on Thursday, Nov. 5 at 5 p.m. Cal Lutheran, the top seed, will host the whole tournament which will continue on Nov. 7. Check back on the CMS website for more information next week.
