No. 10 Athenas on top in Sixth Street rivalry
CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps volleyball team extended their win streak to four games after beating Pomona-Pitzer in four sets (25-12, 25-16, 20-25, 25-14) on Tuesday night in the Linde Activities Center. Sophomore Shelbi Stein (CMC) had a big night, nailing down 21 kills in just four sets.
Stein began the game with three service aces, putting CMS up 10-4 in the first set. In the whole match she would have five.
The Athenas controlled the first set easily as sophomore Mariah Rigg (CMC) added four kills and sophomore Sarah Bruml (SCR) and junior Nicole Kerkhof (CMC) doubled for two blocks. Bruml had two kills in her first two swings, giving CMS the 23-9 advantage late in the set.
In the second set, the Athenas combined for six service aces: three from sophomore Clara Madsen (CMC), two from Stein and sophomore Mikena Werner (SCR). The service game was so on point that Pomona-Pitzer had a difficult time controlling the ball, passing it immediately back to CMS following the serve.
Early in the third set, Bruml and Kerkhof had an excellent block of an attack from PP's Julia Zwaal at the 3-2 mark in the Sagehens' favor. The Athenas faltered slightly in the rest of the set, hitting just .042.
Stein helped CMS bring the victory home in the fourth with eight of the team's 17 kills in the set. As the Athenas' only setter for the night, Madsen dished out 40 assists throughout the match. Additionally, she recorded 16 digs for her sixth double-double on the season.
Also with double-doubles for the Athenas were Stein (21 kills, 10 digs) and Kerkhof (14 kills, 22 digs).
The team totaled 11 blocks on the night for the second highest count of the season. Bruml led with five assisted and one huge solo block.
CMS (16-4, 6-2 SCIAC) takes on three more opponents this week. On Friday, Oct. 16, the Athenas host No. 14 Southwestern (19-2) at 1 p.m. and then travel to Caltech for another match at 7:30 p.m. The following day, CMS hosts No. 21 La Verne (15-3, 9-1 SCIAC) for a rematch after their epic five-set match on Sep. 22.
