Coberly named AVCA D-III National Assistant Volleyball Coach of the Year

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – After helping lead the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps volleyball team to its first trip to the NCAA Division III quarterfinals and their best season in program history, Morgan Coberly has been chosen as the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III National Assistant Coach of the Year. The AVCA formally presented their awards at the 2014 Jostens Coaches Honors Luncheon in Oklahoma City on Dec. 18. The luncheon was held in conjunction with the 2014 AVCA Annual Convention.

"I had never really thought about an award like this.  Honestly, I try to stay focused on winning and giving the team and players the support they need.  My job is easy when you have such a hardworking and talented group of young women like we have here at CMS," said Coberly. "I am so proud of our team and the 2014 season, but most importantly, I look forward to what the future holds."

CMS won a team-record 27 matches in 2014 including a win over Cal Lutheran who was the second-ranked team in Division III at the time. After earning an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships, CMS won the Thousand Oaks Regional with wins over Mary Hardin-Baylor, Colorado College and Trinity (Texas).

Coberly just completed his 10th season as an assistant coach for CMS and the team has had nine winning seasons including a pair of 20-plus win seasons during his tenure. In addition to coaching with CMS, Coberly has an extensive coaching background that includes time as a head coach at Bonita High School and the University of La Verne men's volleyball team along with numerous club-level teams. He is now the Club Director for Forza 1 Volleyball Club in Ontario, CA.

"What Morgan did this season is nothing short of remarkable. His ability to adapt and adjust is second to none, and we are so lucky to have him with us," said head coach Kurt Vlasich. "In a year where we lost our second assistant (Savannah) because of the birth of her first child, Morgan really stepped up and handled double-duty for us. To see him get this award makes me incredibly happy. I cannot think of a better friend and coach that this award should go to.  Without Morgan, this season would not have turned out the way it did."

Prior to coaching, Coberly played college volleyball for the University of La Verne where he was captain and starting setter for their 1998 National Final Four runner-up team. Coberly finished his senior season at La Verne as the school's all-time career leader in assists and was an Asics First Team College All-American, as well as being selected to the 1998 National Final Four All-Tournament Team.
